Mesa police officer struck and killed by wrong-way driver

Accidents during the late night hours could occur for various reasons. A driver might have bad night vision, be fatigued or possibly under the influence. No matter the reason, if a driver not able to safely operate a motor vehicle, they could cause a serious or even fatal crash. This could result in potential criminal penalties as well and civil liabilities for the driver at fault.

A fatal motor vehicle accident recently occurred in Phoenix and involved a Mesa police officer and a wrong-way driver. Reports indicated that the 32-year-old officer was on his way home from work and was struck by a wrong-way driver at around 12:30 a.m. The collision happened on U.S. 60 and Interstate 10 going westbound.

It was reported that the negligent driver had been traveling against traffic since the Loop 101 near Cactus Road as well as on State Route 51 before traveling on Interstate 10. The department of Public Safety was informed by several other drivers about the wrong-way driver and they even tried to ram the vehicle while they were traveling on Piestewa Freeway near Thomas Road, but the driver evaded officers.

The collision resulted in a fiery accident cite and emergency crews transported both drivers to the burn unit for emergency medical care. Despite these efforts, both drivers were pronounced dead. Authorities are still investigating this fatal crash and are seeking to establish a cause.

When a loved one is lost due to a negligent driver, the family members of the deceased could file a wrongful death claim. This could be filed against the negligent driver directly or their estate is they did not survive the crash. This could result in a monetary award. Compensation from the suit could be used to offset the associated expenses such as medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and damages.

Coping with a fatal accident can be difficult. This is especially true when a negligent driver suddenly takes another person's life. Understanding legal options could greatly benefit the family of the deceased. It could help alleviate financial hardships while also assisting with the coping process.
