Two city workers in Phoenix injured by distracted driver

It is not uncommon for drivers in Arizona to encounter a construction site. These areas often block off a lane of traffic or a shoulder while workers tend to the road. In order to avoid accidents in these construction zones, cones and blockades are set up and the speed limit is often reduced. Although these precautions are set up, a negligent driver could easily cause a serious car accident with a construction vehicle or worker.

Authorities in Phoenix were recently dispatched to an accident that involved a construction truck and a car in Ashwatukee on Pecos Road. According to reports, two workers were repairing the road surface on Pecos Road between Desert Foothills Parkway and 24th Street when a car collided with the back of their work truck around 12:30 p.m.

One of the city employees was working near the rear of the vehicle and was hit by the car when it collided with the truck. The 38-year-old male was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the work truck suffered minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

According to police reports, the driver of the car stated that she became distracted by something falling on the back floor of her vehicle. She reached back to grab it, causing her to veer off the road and collide with the city truck. It is not clear whether she suffered any injuries, but the one-year-old and three-year-old children in the back seat suffered minor injuries.

Officers cited the woman for failing to control the speed of her vehicle in order to avoid a collision. It is not clear whether she faces any other charges. In addition to the traffic citation, the driver could also face a civil action. Those injured could file a personal injury claim in order to recover compensation to cover expenses related to the crash. The monetary award could cover expenses such as medical bills, lost wages and other related damages.

Drivers who become distracted while behind the wheel can be very dangerous. Even if it is only for a split second, a distracted driver could lose control of his or her vehicle, suddenly speed or collide with a nearby vehicle. Those affected by a distracted driver accident might have legal remedies concerning the injuries and damages they suffered as a result of the accident, and should therefore speak with someone who can help them understand their legal rights.
