Phoenix and Arizona Bicycle Accidents

Phoenix averages between 450 and 500 bicycle accidents a year.

Arizona is ranked fourth for the top ten most dangerous states for cyclists, behind Florida, Louisiana and Oregon, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

As bicycling continues to grow in popularity, and as a means to get to work and school, traffic deaths of pedestrians and bicyclists have been increasing the last several years, at a rate higher than motor vehicle fatalities, also according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

In 2013 there were over 900 bicyclists killed in traffic crashes in the United States.

Those who are most at risk for bicycle fatalities are adolescents and young adults (15-29 years) and adults aged 45 years and older, males are more likely to be injured than females. Most deaths occur in urban areas at non-intersection locations.

One potential safety remedy is to involve city engineers, city planners, bicyclists and pedestrians in the design and redesign of intersections and streets.

More funding for bike and walking projects may also help to improve safety and reduce crashes.
