Tamir Rice Cleveland Police Shooting Wrongful Death Settlement

Cleveland will pay $6 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the relatives of Tamir Rice, a 12 year old shot and killed by a police officer. The settlement has to be approved by a probate court.

It was reported that Cleveland police officers were not told about a call stating that a person may have been a child, with a toy weapon. Tamir was holding a toy gun when he was shot by an officer at a Cleveland playground in November, 2014.

Tamir's death is one of several recent high profile cases triggering discussions regarding use of deadly force by city police department officers, particularly against black men and boys.

New York City agreed to pay $5.9 million dollars to the family of Eric Garner, who died after being put in a choke hold by a police officer.

Baltimore agreed to pay $6.4 million to the family of Freddie Gray, who died while in police custody.

North Charleston S.C. paid $6.5 million to the family of Walter Scott, also shot by police.
