Bicycle Collisions and Injuries

In 2012 it was reported by the Arizona Republic that Phoenix averages between 450 and 500 accidents a year between bicycles and motor vehicles.

It was further reported that there has been a high frequency of collisions near Indian School Road and 23rd Avenue, on 27th Avenue and near Interstate 17. Glendale averaged approximately 36 bicycle accidents a year.

Across the United States 500,000 people are treated in emergency rooms after bicycle accidents, and more than 700 bicyclists are killed.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Arizona has consistently been in the top 10 states for bicycle traffic fatalities. In 2009 Arizona was ranked number five in the United States, although it was the 16th most populated state.

Unfortunately, even if a bicyclist is careful, serious injuries and fatalities occur. The lack of bike lanes and marked crosswalks is a contributing factor. Sometimes drivers don't see bicyclists or don't take proper precautions.

Recently I represented a bicyclist who was traveling in the crosswalk in Scottsdale, at Thompson Peak Parkway and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, on a green light, with a walk sign, however he was struck by a left turning driver, serious injuries resulted. Drivers need to pay close attention and be alert for bicyclists.
