Phoenix Signs Warning Wrong Way Bicyclists

The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department has placed new signs to alert bicyclists going against traffic that they are riding the wrong way. The signs are mostly found in downtown Phoenix and on 7th Avenue and 15th Avenue.

The goal is to warn bicyclists and drivers because drivers may not expect or see a bicyclist going against traffic.

It has been reported that in Phoenix about 33 percent of bicyclist involved crashes are related to bicyclists riding the wrong way. In 2013 there were 485 bicycle collisions, with 417 injuries and 10 deaths.

Arizona has one of the worst bicycle fatality rates in the county. In the United States, in 2013, 743 pedacyclists were killed and 48,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Most fatalities occurred in urban areas, and at non intersections.
